Our fantastic Tax Compliance Assistant, Enise, passed her Personal Tax & Capital Gains Tax exams. We asked her what drives her in her role here at Benson Accountants.
1.What attracted you to a career in tax?
Benson Accountants is what attracted me to a career in tax. Initially, I started off in accounts and intended to progress with this, however my decision to move into tax was influenced by the welcoming and down-to-earth characteristics of the practice. This, combined with the range of tax work carried out at Bensons, particularly that of the specialist tax team is what sparked my interest.
2. What's your favourite part of your career so far?
My career in tax is still in the early stages so there are constant new learning experiences to benefit from. It’s nice being exposed to different areas of tax and learning about them, both in the office and through study of the ATT/CTA qualifications. I find it satisfying when I can apply new knowledge to my work which contributes towards the success of the tax team.
3. What is the biggest challenge you’ve come across so far?
One challenge I have come across so far is the basis period reform which has caused a change in accounts year-ends. These changes will affect the tax position of lots of clients who have been subject to these changes, and my role has been to calculate their overlap profits so they receive the correct tax relief on their 5 April 2024 self-assessment tax returns.
3. What was your background before joining Benson Accountants?
I studied at Newcastle University where I gained a degree in Psychology BSc (Hons). I preferred the quantitative side of my degree, focusing on statistical analysis and research, so I knew I wanted to work in a numerical field. After graduating University, I spent (almost) two years working as a trainee accountant at another practice before joining Benson Accountants in September 2023.
4. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in tax?
Gaining some work experience in tax would be a great way to determine your suitability to the field. There are lots of challenging and demanding exams to undertake in this career path, so enjoying the job as well as being dedicated are positive attributes to have.
5. What are your career goals?
I am currently studying towards the Level 7 ATT/CTA combined pathway. My goals are to complete my qualifications and become a Chartered Tax Advisor working in a wide range of tax affairs.
6. What is a fun fact about you that people might not know?
I like to play squash, I’m bi-lingual and I also collect vinyl records! I try to get original pressings and releases for my collection.
