Meet the Team - Jonny, Accounts Apprentice

Jonny completed his Assistant Accountant Level 3 qualification. After two years with Benson Accountants, we’re excited to celebrate his achievement!

What attracted you to a career in accounting?

When I was in school, I explained to the careers adviser that I really enjoyed maths, as there is only a right or wrong answer, but that I was also interested in what it takes to create and run a successful business. They suggested that I explore the option of a career in Accountancy.

What is your favourite part of your apprenticeship?

I really enjoy the office environment. Everyone has been so supportive and its very sociable, so it’s been easy to settle in and just be myself.  I’ve also enjoyed learning about the different types of businesses, how they operate and then putting my skills to use when pulling their figures together. More recently I’ve started building client relationships which has really helped me grow in confidence.

What was your background before joining Benson Accountants?

I joined Benson’s after completing my GCSEs.  I knew I didn’t want to stay in school, and wanted to learn new skills whilst working, so I started my apprenticeship straight away.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

If you think you can give your full commitment to an apprenticeship, then my advice would be a definite yes.  For me, it was the best decision I made as I gain experience in the office which compliments the learning I receive at college.  It may seem daunting at first, but the team is very supportive and will help you every step of the way.

What are your career goals within accounting?

So far I have completed both my AAT Level 2 bookkeeping and AAT Level 3 Qualification in Financial Accounting.  I’ve now started my Level 4 Diploma in Accounting, and all being well, once it's complete, I would like to go on to become a Chartered Accountant.

What is a fun fact about you that people might not know?

I play cricket for Wigton Cricket Club, in the Cumbrian league, and I also play for Wigton Hockey Club, all over the North West of England.
